With the nicer weather finally approaching, people in Glenrothes are being advised by the police to keep their windows and doors locked.
That's because the number of sneak-in thefts typically rises around this time of year. Burglaries are generally down in the area.
According to the most recent figures, the Fife area saw a 6% increase in crime overall last year, with around 440 crimes committed per 10,000 people in the Kingdom. There was 4% increase in Housebreaking overall in Scotland in 2013-14, driven by an increase of 15% in housebreaking of non-dwellings. This includes garages, garden huts and sheds and outhouses.
Sgt Kenny Greig, the community sergeant at Glenrothes police station, said:
We're coming into the better weather and people will start thinking about going out in the garden and maybe leaving their front door open during the day. I would just ask people to remain vigilant and not make it easy for any potential criminal.
Instances of house break-ins is decreasing, but instances of sneak-ins is increasing, so don't make it easy for people. Secure your windows, doors, garages and garden sheds, because they're very vulnerable at this time of year."
