Unpaid court fines have hit a record £25m
Scotland’s court system is now owed more than £25 million in unpaid criminal fines according to new research.
The huge underpayment in fines comes at a time when the Scottish Government is increasingly urging sheriffs to use fiscal penalties as an alternative to custodial sentences.
However, that tactic is backfiring as more criminals are being let off with a fine, many of which are never paid.
