Pubs showing sports without a TV licence risk heavy fines and a court prosecution.
That is the call from TV licencers as the new football season kicks off this weekend. All venues must hold a valid licence - which costs no more than a residential one - if they want to broadcast matches to their customers.
Jason Hill, TV Licensing Scotland spokesman, said: "With 707 licensed outlets in Fife, many fans will choose to watch the matches in their local pub, soaking up the atmosphere whilst following all the twist and turns of what is sure to be an exciting campaign.
"It’s important pubs and clubs are correctly licensed and we know landlords and managers want to stay within the law, which is why we are issuing this advice at the start of the season."
Brigid Simmonds, Chief Executive, Scottish Beer and Pub Association said: "It’s a good idea for landlords and licensees, as well as bar and club managers, to check their TV licence is up-to-date to support this very busy time. Live sport is a massive draw for millions of pub-goers, so I’d urge those in charge of the TV Licence to check the bar is correctly licensed."
