Thousands sign up to Fife Facebook page to help during coronavirus outbreak

2,000 people have signed up to a Fife Facebook page to help those in need during the coronavirus outbreak.

Fife Covid-19 Mutual Aid Group has only been running for a few days.

Volunteers will help with activities such as shopping and chatting on the phone to those who are self-isolating.

The group says every postcode area across the Kingdom is covered for volunteers available to provide support.

Ex-army officers are also offering to help, as well as people from other walks of life.

Erlend MacGillivray runs the page and has described how the Facebook group started.

The page's admin said: "It was on Saturday evening I was watching the news about what was happening in Italy, with all the dead and the dying and the images of people over 70 potentially being left without any help.

"I felt very helpless.

"It was just a way to try and do something, to try and show that the people of Fife are there to offer support to anyone who might need it in self-isolation."

On the page's popularity among those who want to help, Erlend added: "It's fantastic!

"I really am genuinely blown away with how many people are responding to it."

Anyone who wants to know more information about how to get involved should e-mail fifecoronavirusvolunteers@gmail.com or sign up to the page on Facebook by searching 'Fife Covid-19 Mutual Aid'.
