Thousands sign online petitions to stop cuts to Fife fire service

The fight against fire service cuts in Fife has seen a swell in support with more than three thousand people signing online petitions.

They were set up by firefighters after plans were revealed to remove appliances from local stations.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service is planning to remove appliances from Methil, Glenrothes, Kirkcaldy and Dunfermline in September.

Kirkcaldy is set to lose its height appliance whilst the other three stations would lose a pump each.

A petition has been set up for each affected fire station.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service insists safety wouldn't be compromised by the cost-cutting move, aimed at saving 11 million pounds.

But members of the FBU are concerned response times would be impacted, putting firefighters and the public at risk.

Some of those signing the petitions have called the planned cuts "wrong" and worry that "lives will be lost" if they go ahead.

All four petitions against Fife fire service cuts follow a protest by firefighters in Glenrothes.
