'Save our only pub from ruin' - North Queensferry residents seek community ownership

Residents of North Queensferry want to see their only local pub taken over by the community.

The Albert Hotel - situated just below the Forth Bridge - has been unoccupied for 6 years, and is now suffering from a leaky roof.

Campaigners fear it could fall into a state of 'ruin' - and are now balloting the villages' residents in the hopes they can secure enough support for community ownership.

Alastair Richie, leader of the campaign, said: "The people would be able to make use of an important part of our heritage - we could use it to socialise, run community events, to eat and to drink.

"The building is in urgent need of restoration or it will decline into a ruin.

"North Queensferry doesn't have a pub - yet it's a busy tourist destination."

The owner of the Albert Hotel has been approached for comment.

He has previously outlined plans to turn the building into a bar, restaurant and hotel, which he says would create six local jobs.

His plans to turn the building into flats did not get approval.

Profits for Community

Mr Richie added: "We have the UNESCO heritage site of the Forth Rail bridge, we have deep sea world, the coastal path and the pilgrims way.

"It's common to see visitors wandering about looking for some hospitality - so a functioning Albert Hotel could provide a useful boost to tourism.

"If the community owned it, it would be run for sustainable development of the village - not purely for generating profit.

"Any money made by the project would be reinvested in the building and then later in the local community."

Once locals have been balloted, Mr Richie will be beginning the application process with the Scottish Government.
