Plans to reverse the way people are listed as organ donors will be discussed at Holyrood later.
The new law proposes a system that assumes you want to donate your organs, unless you tell your GP or say otherwise on your driving license.
The number of Scots missing out on transplants is falling, but last year 169 were left without a replacement.
Dr Sue Robertson, from the BMA’s Scottish Council, supports the move.
She said: "We believe that it would have a positive effect on donation rates, but also because it gives added protection to those who do not wish to donate and makes it more likely that those who are willing to donate will be able to do so.”
Also supporting the consultation are the Cystic Fibrosis Trust, South East of Scotland Kidney Patients’ Association, the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh and the Scottish Kidney Federation.
