Pressure on Justice Secretary to drop corroboration proposals
Justice secretary Kenny MacAskill is being urged to heed what’s been called the damning conclusions of a report on ending the need for corroboration in Scotland’s courts.
Lib Dem justice spokeswoman Alison McInnes says the justice committee’s report shows the majority of it’s members don’t believe the case has been made for the controversial measure.
Today’s report raises specific concerns on the lack of adequate safeguards to counteract the possibility of wrongful convictions.
Ms McInnes says the committee’s sending the strongest possible message to Mr MacAskill that the jumbled and half baked ideas can have no place on the statute books.
She says he’s been stumbling around in the face of widespread opposition from Scotland’s top judges, legal bodies and human rights organisations – and should now remove this section from the criminal justice bill.
