Scottish Liberal Democrat health spokesman Jim Hume MSP says there are deep-seated, systemic problems in the way mental ill health is treated in Scotland.
The issues have been revealed during a mental health summit hosted by the Scottish Liberal Democrats at the Scottish Parliament.
Service users, medical experts, charities and mental health campaigners took part in discussions regarding the provision of mental health services in Scotland.
Issues raised included lack of inpatient beds for children with conditions such as severe autism, staff shortages in consulting, nursing and psychiatry and problems with long waiting times for access to both adult and childrens services.
Jim Hume MSP is the health spokesman for the Scottish Liberal Democrats "This meeting is an important first step towards identifying the challenges that we face and talking about how we can ensure that Scotland has mental health services which are built to last."
