A study is underway to determine whether the Levenmouth rail link can be re-opened.
The 'STAG' feasibility survey - at a cost of £100,000 - is being funded by Fife Council with councillors considering re-opening the line a top priority.
With approximately 37,000 people, Levenmouth is the most populated area in Scotland without train access, and campaigners believe the move would increase job prospects for locals.
The Leven to Thornton line has been closed to the public since the 1960s, but part of the line was used until 2006.
It is estimated the cost of reinstalling the line would total at least £55million.
