A Fife biology teacher has reached the final of the Annual STEMNET Awards 2015 in the Most Dedicated Teacher in the UK category.
Helen Higham was shortlisted in the awards for motivating young people in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM).
As Principal Teacher of Science and STEM at Kirkcaldy High School, Helen has been supporting the school to develop pupils' skills and ensuring that they go into education, employment, or training when they leave school.
Kirkcaldy High is one of the few state schools to offer a Baccalaureate in Science, and Biology pupils are now gaining unit passes in a new qualification - Scottish Studies.
Helen's work involves holding a weekly science club and supporting pupils achieve the British Science Association's CREST Gold Award - giving students opportunities in real-world science projects.
Derek Brown, Fife Council's Head of Education Services, said: "I am delighted that Helen's enthusiasm, dedication and passion for STEM and teaching is being recognised, which is a testament to the quality of the teaching delivered in Kirkcaldy High and across Fife."
Cllr Lesley Laird, Fife Council’s Depute Leader and Spokesperson Economy and Planning, said: “A strong economy is built on a strong education and STEM subjects are central to boosting skills and employability for young people in Fife. Engineering today is a diverse career and far removed from the traditional images of what engineering used to look like.
"That’s why we want to encourage more young Fifer’s to look again at the range of careers that studying these subjects can offer, so that we can give them the widest career opportunities possible, and at the same time help fuel our economy.
“Fife Council is working with employers, schools, and Fife College to promote and raise awareness of STEM opportunities and to help create the skilled workforce of the future.”
Kevin McKeever, STEM East, said: “This is great news for both Helen and Kirkcaldy High School and reflects some of the fantastic work taking place in both Fife and throughout the East of Scotland.”
"The final of the STEMNET Annual Awards, which recognise the most dedicated people involved in its programmes, take place at the House of Lords, London, on Tuesday 6 October 2015. The prestigious awards will be hosted by STEMNET’s President, Lord Sainsbury."
