A couple have admitted to starting a fire at a block of flats in Lochgelly last October.

Jamie Morrison, 34, and Chloe Arnott, 31, from Glenrothes appeared at the High Court in Edinburgh today (25 July), accepting a charge of wilful fire raising to the danger of life.

They had originally been charged with attempted murder.

The court heard how the pair started the blaze on the top floor by lighting a piece of paper and left without alerting residents.

All eight residents were evacuated after a neighbour alerted them to what was going on.

All of them were unharmed.

Multiple fire crews used height appliances to reach the flames on the top floor, spending many hours at the scene.

The block on Francis Street was destroyed after being deemed unsafe.

The court heard how the cost for Fife Council to demolish the building was just under £79,000.

There were further indirect costs for the local authority as a result of road closures and emergency gas work.

It will cost a further £2.1 million to rebuild the block.

The pair will be sentenced on August 28.
