Plans to reinstate Newburgh Station could soon be back on track.
Fife Council has agreed to support a study into bringing it back into use.
The green light has also been granted to look into the feasibility of a Levenmouth line.
Fife Liberal Democrat leader Councillor Tim Brett said: "There has been a long-standing campaign to reinstate a station at Newburgh, which is on the line from Ladybank to Perth.
"If this proves to be positive then Fife Council's Executive has asked for consideration to be given to the funding of a full STAG along with other
partners."
Howe of Fife member Cllr Donald Lothian agreed and added: "There is no doubt in my mind that the communities of Newburgh and Abernethy would benefit significantly from the re-opening of a rail halt at Newburgh and I fully support the local group which is pressing the case."
