Fife has been identified in a major year-long study on food and poverty as 'one of the most deprived areas in the UK'
The report, released today by the Fabian Society, recommends that the council sets up a 'food action plan' to establish why so many people have difficulty accessing nutritious food, and tackling those root causes. This, they say, should be funded from the public health budget.
The research group is also accusing the Prime Minister of having no strategy for tackling hunger, saying charities, businesses and individuals are having to step in instead.
Drawing on public hearings, expert testimony and the insights of people with experience of managing poverty, the Commission has uncovered a crisis of food access for many households in the UK.
There are multiple cases of parents - usually mothers - going hungry to feed their children or having to prioritise calories over nutrients to afford their weekly food shop.
It found many people are feeling anxious from the struggle to manage serious squeezes in household budgets that arise from the cost of living rising faster than income.
