Fife Flyers: Squad prepares for last group match in the challenge cup

The Fife Flyers are preparing for a tough weekend against the Belfast Giants.

The Giant's are last year's grand slam champions, winning the Elite League, Challenge Cup and Play-Offs last season.

It was the first time they had done it, and it was only the second time the feat had been achieved in the Elite League's history.

The Flyers finish their group action in the Challenge Cup on Friday (October 12) in what is expected to be an exciting match in Belfast.

The two teams then travel back to Fife for Saturday's game in the Elite League.

The Flyers will be hoping to do better than their 1-0 defeat against the Giants at the start of the month.

Saturday's match will be the Fife side's second match of their league campaign, having beat Coventry in their season debut a couple of weeks ago.

Meanwhile, a player from the Dundee Stars has received a one game suspension for boarding Fife Flyers' Adam Holwell during their game on Sunday.

The Elite League's department of player safety describes Kris Inglis' hit, which saw Holwell slam into the boards face first, as "forceful" and "dangerous" and says he had enough time to reduce its force or avoid it all together.

In a statement the Elite League said: "Inglis dumps the puck into the attacking zone and Holwell goes back to retrieve it, with Inglis pursuing on the forecheck.

"Holwell arrives at the puck and looks to make a play around the net. As he does, Inglis adjusts his course and hits him forcefully from behind and into the boards. This is boarding.

"It is important to note that the boarding rule puts the onus on the hitter to deliver a legal check, therefore whilst we acknowledge that Holwell does adjust his body position to make a play on the puck, he does not do so in a way that absolves Inglis of responsibility for the nature of this hit. From the moment Holwell is at the hash marks and Inglis at the top of the circles, Inglis sees nothing but Holwell’s numbers until contact is made.

"This is not a situation where a sudden or unexpected movement by the player receiving the check turns a legal check into an illegal one. When Holwell begins to make a play on the puck, Inglis is lined up with the back of the left side of Holwell’s body, Inglis has time to react to Holwell's movement.

"Having seen Holwell’s numbers for some time, who is at a vulnerable distance from the boards, Inglis chooses to finish his check into his opponent's back, driving him into the boards. Inglis had sufficient time to minimize the force of this hit, avoid the hit entirely or adjust his course to deliver a legal check.

"Instead, with the onus on him to avoid delivering an illegal and dangerous hit, Inglis delivers the check directly through Holwell’s back, driving him dangerously into the boards."

Speaking to Kingdom FM last week, Fife Flyers head coach Tom Coolen revealed who he selected as team and assistant captains for the new season.
