Dunfermline peacocks to be given Freedom of the City

The much-loved peacocks in Dunfermline's Pittencrieff Park are to be given the Freedom of the City.

The birds have been a fixture of the park since 1905, introduced by Fife-born orientalist Henry Beveridge upon his return from India.

14 peafowl currently live there, including Andrew, Angus and Louis.

The latter was badly injured when their aviary was broken into last year. His father, Malcolm, was tragically killed in the attack.

The City of Dunfermline Area Committee has now agreed today (24 October, 2023), to recommend that the award be given to the birds.

Committee Convener, Cllr James Calder said: “Dunfermline’s peacocks are very important to the city. By supporting awarding them freedom of the city we’re recognising their valuable contribution and encouraging their presence in and around the city.

“The Council will now look at ratifying the decision and we will also start planning a presentation ceremony to mark the award.”

The sanctuary is run by volunteers and relies on donations. It's open to the public on weekends between 11am and 3pm.
