Kennoway is trialling a new system to cut out the number of recycling bins clogging up the street and inviting vermin.
It's after residents raised concerns following the new wheelie bins being used incorrectly, meaning they weren't emptied, leading to rats and mice.
The flats on Leven Road's 29 bins are being replaced with 4 large communal ones.
If successful, the move could be rolled out across Fife.
Fife Housing Association Team Leader Chris Harrower said: “The bins have generated numerous complaints from tenants living in our flats, along with neighbouring owners.
“It is important to us that our tenants can recycle successfully. Unfortunately, the allocation of four bins for each flat has led to some confusion and created both a smell and an eyesore in the area.
“We believe the use of communal bins could be a simple solution to a long-running problem which could really improve our residents’ lives and the area they live in.
“However, it is important to us that we listen to our tenants and take on board what they want. That is why we are piloting the communal bins in one area before taking this Fife-wide.
“We are very keen to hear tenants’ views before we start this project and while it is underway.”
Ross Spalding, Fife Council’s Service Manager of the Climate Change and Zero Waste Team added: “We’re hopeful it’s a solution that can both meet the residents’ concerns, but still allow them to recycle and help Fife move towards zero waste.”
