Raith Join Scottish Parliamentarians & RAF In Marking Occasion.
Raith Rovers is to play host to a friendly football match between the Scottish Parliament and the RAF, kicking off at 11am today at Stark's Park.
The fixture marks an opportunity for the club along with Scottish MSPs and MPs to show their support for and to raise public awareness of the contribution made by those who serve in the armed forces.
Raith Rovers have, in this centenary year, launched a new away strip dedicated to the memory of those players who signed up to McCrae's Battalion and all those who went on to fight and die in the Great War. Carrying no sponsorship , the strip says simply 'Remember.'
The annual fixture between the Scottish Parliament and the RAF is now in its fifth year, with the elected representatives winning the 'Reivers' Trophy” for the first time last year at Tynecastle.
Ken Macintosh MSP, Captain of the Scottish Parliamentary team said:
"The sacrifice made by the players of Raith Rovers one hundred years on, still touches all those who hear the story.
“It is great to see the club mark the occasion with the “Remember” strip and we were delighted to have the opportunity to show our support in playing our armed forces day match against the RAF at Stark’s Park."
Local MP Gordon Brown, who will kick off the match added:
"I am delighted Raith Rovers are hosting this match. Turnbull Hutton and Eric Drysdale have ensured that Raith Rovers will never forget the men who served and died in the war.
“This match is a chance to show that people of all walks of life care about these commemoration events and I am delighted to kick off the match as local MP."
Chief Executive of Raith Rovers, Eric Drysdale said:
"We are delighted to welcome the RAF and Scottish Parliamentary teams to Stark's Park for this special fixture, and we feel sure that this match will rival anything the Brazil World Cup has to offer, in terms of effort and commitment anyway! Our doors will be open on the day, and entry is free."
