Tax letters hit doorsteps

The first of 6 million taxpayers will find out if they've under or overpaid their tax this morning.

It means 1 point 4 million people could be required to shell out nearly 1,500
pounds each to make up a 2 billion pound shortfall.

Emma Boon from the Taxpayers alliance says it's been an accident waiting to
happen.

The Scottish Government has published a survey on transport use.

Fewer people are car sharing to get to work.

And only 15 per cent of people walk or use a bike to get to work.

Shadow Transport Minister, Jackson Carlaw says more must be done.

Bleak outlook say employers

Scottish employers are not looking to hire in the near future.

Results from the Manpower Employment Outlook survey has found that businesses actually plan on reducing staff numbers over the coming months.

This marks Scotland's eighth consecutive quarter of downbeat hiring prospects.

Police to look at phone hacking allegations

Police say they could reopen the investigation into claims that News of the
World reporters hacked into the mobile phones of public figures.

It follows claims that David Cameron's director of communications - Andy
Coulson - knew of the practice when he was editor of the paper.

Downing Street says Mr Coulson "totally and utterly" rejects the allegations.

And the News of the World says it "rejects absolutely any suggestion there was
a widespread culture of wrongdoing".

Locals in Anstruther are to be consulted on plans to revamp the town.

An exhibition of the proposed Townscape Heritage Initiative will be on display at the Murray Library on Tuesday afternoon

The plans aim to repair and regenerate some of the village's most historic buildings.

The THI are looking for views and ideas on how some of the key buildings in the plans will be used.

Earthquake hits New Zealand

A powerful 7-point-1 magnitude earthquake has left New Zealand's second
largest city of Christchurch in a state of emergency.

Two people are seriously injured and officials say it's "extremely lucky" no
one was killed.

Roads and bridges are badly damaged and thousands of people have no power.

Tax blunder to affect millions


More than a million people are facing a bill for not paying enough tax due to
a blunder at the Inland Revenue.

Nearly 6 million people can expect a letter from the tax office.

Some will get a bill of 1-thousand 500 pounds - four million people will get a
refund.

The first 45-thousand letters will arrive on Tuesday.

Scottish Government seeks publics views

The Scottish Government wants views on electoral change.

The aim is to avoid proplems that beset the 2007 local governmennt elections.

Issues to be looked at include when the elections are held, how ballots are counted, and the positioning of candidate names on the papers.

The consultation runs until mid October.

The UK Government is planning to cut funding for research into asbestos related illnesses.

This has left the Scottish Parliament reeling.

20 people a week die from problems linked to asbestos.
