Fairer booze tax could create jobs

30, 000 jobs could be created by introducing a fairer tax on beer, according to an industry body.

The British Beer and Pub Association claims taxing alcohol, depending on its strength, would potentially generate £250-million for the government.

The BBPA says beer is taxed more per unit than vodka, gin and cider.

Greater protection for children online

Full advertising rules are soon going to apply to websites like Twitter and Facebook to help protect children.

The Advertising Standards Authority say misleading messages will also be targeted like they are on radio and television from next March.

They've received 4, 500 complaints since 2008 that they couldn't deal with.

HP to pay US government

Computer giant Hewlett-Packard has agreed to pay 55-million dollars to settle allegations that it defrauded the US government.

The company announced earlier this month that it had reached a settlement, in principle, with the Justice Department.

Negative equity prospects for many

Homeowners who bought during the peak of the housing boom are facing another four years of negative equity before they can recover what they paid.

The National Housing Federation predicts that a lack of newly built properties will boost prices by around 22% by 2014.

It's also warning that the lack of affordable housing could see an entire generation locked out of the market.

An increasing number of young workers don't trust their employers.

Research finds a third of 16 to 24 year olds disbelieve most of what their boss tells them.

Those in the legal profession are the most sceptical, while human resources workers are the most trusting.

Pay cut for many

Public sector workers have become more likely to accept a pay cut since the general election.

According to a TotalJobs study, two thirds would take a lower salary if it meant keeping their jobs.

That compares with just one in five before the government changed.The recruitment firm says public sector staff are now also more likely to move
region if necessary.

Recession details to be unveiled

The extent of the UK's recovery from recession will be revealed this morning.

Revised figures for economic growth for the second quarter of this year are published by the Office for National Statistics.

During the last quarter, the economy experienced stronger-than-expected growth of one-point-one percent.

Rent rates rise

A shortage of properties available to let meant rents went up during the second quarter of this year.

The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors says ongoing mortgage problems and concerns over falling house prices have led to increased numbers of people looking to rent.

But, despite record low interest rates, landlords are finding it hard to get buy-to-let mortgages.

Firms increase wages

Fewer firms are freezing the pay of their workers.

A study's found more employers are giving rises of 3% or more in a sign that higher-end deals are on the increase.

Most of the deals agreed between May and July were worth around 2%.

Manufacturing workers faced more pay freezes than those in service firms in recent months.
